Oppo is a brand that many of you haven’t heard of and I’m sure I’m right when I say this. Have you ever used a phone made by Oppo? These guys aren’t with us for that long but they know how to make a decent phone and sell it at a great price. This year, Oppo R15 Pro made its way to the shelves and it’s a beautiful phone that many of you will like. This time, Oppo decided to surprise us with the flagship quality and tons of amazing features under its hood. If you are already jumping in your room and feeling excited, it’s time to give this boy a proper review.
Design and Build Quality
Oppo R15 Pro made sure that its design stays great throughout the whole device. I’m not kidding – this quality can be seen on iPhone devices and it’s bloody amazing! From the front, the device sports a huge AMOLED display which we’ll talk about later, and on the back, we have a nice curved glass that makes this phone perfectly fit in your hand. On the back, there are two cameras, LED flash and a fingerprint sensor, set in the right place. Another great thing is the addition of MicroUSB 2.0 port, which means that Oppo is aware of today’s smartphone trends.
Speaking of iPhone, Oppo R15 Pro took direct influence from iPhone X. And yes, we are talking about that notorious notch. While many of us don’t like it that much, I must say that this one is done perfectly. It’s not big and definitely not eye-catching. In fact, it’s so modest that you won’t even notice it! That’s how you do it, Oppo. When it comes to the build quality, the phone is absolutely amazing. Its aluminum and curved glass are one of the best we’ve seen. The only downside is that the back of the phone is a fingerprint magnet, especially if you choose the black color.
Oh, yeah… the AMOLED display. The almighty AMOLED display and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 over the top… that’s a recipe for success! Have we mentioned that this screen is REALLY big? It packs around 6.28 inches in size and a resolution of 1080×2280. Although the screen is very bright, vivid, and packs some punchy colors, the resolution will show its weakness. You’ve already been introduced to 18:9 displays and this famous resolution, but stretching this resolution on a very big screen sometimes reduces its clarity and sharpness.
I would say that this display is on the edge of being not-that-sharp. As we mentioned earlier, we have a protection that keeps this screen from getting scratched or broken. The viewing angles are excellent and the color reproduction is amazing. As this is an AMOLED display, you’ll still see some oversaturated colors here and there, but you can tweak your own color profile and get a decent result. If you ask me, this screen is almost ten out of ten and it’s AMOLED… and you know I like these screens!
Oppo R15 Pro comes equipped with two cameras. We have one with 16 MP and one with 20 MP. In total, this means that we are dealing with 36 MP camera, which is just mind-boggling! Since we have two of them, you can now achieve the great bokeh effect where your background get blurry and your shiny face gets to be the star of the show. This works well for the most time and the autofocus is pretty fast. When it comes to the video recording, we have the ability to record 4K videos at 30 fps.
The videos come in a reasonable quality although it could still be a bit better. What’s interesting about Oppo R15 Pro is its front camera. It’s a 20 MP sensor that’s one of the best at this price range. If you want to be the star of Instagram, this is what camera you should use! Producing a selfie with a great bokeh effect and adding some filters was never this fun. Overall, it’s a pretty badass camera and you’ll like it.
If you look at the specs of this phone, you’ll notice one very good feature. Of course, we are talking about 6GB of RAM. How many times have you seen this amount of RAM in a 600USD phone? Aside from that, we have Snapdragon 660 chipset and Adreno 512 GPU, which is the same as Nokia 7 Plus. Furthermore, Android 8.1 is again here but there are some issues here and there.
The main issue is that Oppo’s software can sometimes get buggy. Even though the hardware is okay, we still got some hitches here and there. Oppo R15 Pro can sometimes get real slow, which is quite surprising for the phone of this price. When it comes to the performance, we can’t say you get what you pay for. Oppo R15 Pro is still a little pricey for my taste.
Battery and Speaker
Oppo R15 Pro features a non-removable Li-Po battery with 3400 mAh of power. On top of that, the phone supports fast charging, which is always a welcome option. However, I found this battery pretty good. I was able to surf the internet, watch some YouTube videos, and explore Instagram’s home page with ease and without the need to charge. That being said, most users will be satisfied with the battery life.
The speaker on Oppo R15 Pro offers nothing new. I don’t know if I’m deaf, but I find this speaker a little underwhelming. I sometimes like to blast some heavy metal while doing stuff and this speaker can use a little boost. If you can, grab your headphones as Oppo still has a 3.5mm port.
Oppo R15 Pro sounds great on the paper but it’s nothing I expected. They tried to make a budget-oriented flagship phone that still leaves a lot to be desired. The camera is good, the design is dope, and the battery life is solid. However, Oppo R15 Pro still needs some fixing when it comes to the performance. Until Oppo fixes its buggy software, we are left to wait and hope for the better.
